5-Minute Health Tip: Drink Pineapple Juice

Studies have shown that pineapple juice is more effective than over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicine at easing a sore throat, and more effective than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) at relieving osteoarthritic pain. Rich in antioxidants like vitamins C, K, and A, and minerals like magnesium, potassium, and manganese, pineapple juice helps keep the immune system strong so you don’t fall prey to the respiratory and viral infections that can cause an irritating and persistent cough.

Pineapple juice contains a high concentration of bromelain, an enzyme with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. A 2006 study published in Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology showed that bromelain extracted from fresh pineapple juice was more effective than NSAIDS at relieving pain in 90 osteoarthritic patients.

Bromelain is also reputed for helping to break down mucous in the lungs and soothe throat irritation from coughing. A 2010 study out of India compared the efficacy of OTC cough syrups to that of a natural mix of pineapple juice, salt, pepper, and honey. The pineapple cocktail proved to be far more effective at treating the coughs of tuberculosis patients than the conventional cough syrups.
