5-Minute Health Tip: Oil Pulling: An All-Natural Mouthwash

Early morning yawinig right before shower.Your dental health goes deeper than pearly whites, healthy gums, and cavity-free chompers. Bacteria in the mouth and inflammation of the gums affect your overall health and have been implicated in life-threatening conditions such as heart attack and dementia. Commercial mouthwashes contain fluoride, alcohol, and other harmful additives and artificial colors. Fortunately, there’s an alternative health option for gums. Take 5 minutes to wash away mouth bacteria and prevent inflammation with a traditional folk remedy that improves your dental health, and your entire well-being.

Remove Bacteria with Oil Pulling

Oil pulling has been used for thousands of years to reduce bad breath and prevent plaque and gingivitis (inflammation of the gums). According to Ayurvedic practitioners, oil pulling not only helps whiten teeth, but also treats headaches, migraines, acne, asthma, and diabetes.

How to Practice Oil Pulling

  1. Choose an oil, such as vitamin E oil, sesame oil, or coconut oil. Scoop out about a tablespoon.
  2. Swoosh the oil around in your mouth for three to five minutes and up to 20.
  3. Spit out the oil and brush your teeth.

Voila! Fresher breather and healthier gums all in as little as 5 minutes!

How it Works

When you swish the oil around in your mouth, bacteria sticks to the oil, gradually dissolving in the liquid. Numerous studies have shown that oil pulling reduces bad breath, plaque, and the symptoms of gingivitis as effectively (and more safely) than chlorhexidine mouthwash. Be sure to spit out that oil at the end of the 5 minutes so that you remove all that trapped bacteria…aka plaque!
