Nutritional yeast, on the other hand, has a nutty, cheesy taste that’s pretty scrumptious. It’s from the fungi family (think mushroom) and is an outstanding vegetarian source of B-12, a vitamin that is typically only acquired through animal-based foods. Nutritional yeast should be a part of every vegetarian/vegan’s diet! Nutritional Yeast Is Nutritionally Loaded! Made from a single-celled organism called Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, nutritional yeast is cultivated on molasses, then harvested, washed, and dried using heat processing to kill, or deactivate it. The link between tea and blood pressure remained tenuous until just this last month, when Chinese researchers published a review of 25 randomized controlled trials in the British Journal of Nutrition. Their examination led them to conclude that over the long term tea lowers blood pressure…and subsequently your risk for heart disease and death! The Findings If you’re looking for a quick fix for high blood pressure, tea isn’t the answer, but research shows that when consumed for at least 12 weeks, tea lowers blood pressure. Twelve weeks of tea drinking lowered systolic pressure (the top number that measures the maximum pressure your heart exerts while beating) by 2.6 mmHg, and diastolic pressure (the bottom number that measures the amount of pressure in your arteries between beats) by 2.2 mmHg. While these reductions in blood pressure might seem minimal, they can have a dramatic impact on your health. Researchers pointed out that a 2.6 decrease in systolic pressure could lower your risk of stroke by 8%, your coronary artery disease mortality risk by 5%, and your all-cause mortality by 4% at a population level. Green tea performed the best, with black tea coming in a close second, regardless of whether or not the teas were caffeinated. Tea Time Previous studies suggest that three or more cups of tea a day should confer blood pressure benefits, as well as safeguard your overall health. For instance, a 2007 study published in the European Journal of Nutrition showed that three or more cups of tea a day lowered the risk of coronary artery disease. Tea, both green and black varieties, is thought to help protect heart health because it relaxes the blood vessels, which promotes optimal blood flow throughout the body. Tea is also high in antioxidants, which have been linked to all manner of disease protection. In fact, polyphenol antioxidants can comprise up to 30% of the dry leaf weight of green tea…quite a shipment of antioxidants! Fact or Myth: Can Cloves Numb Toothaches?

This is a FACT. Hailing from India and Indonesia, cloves are a spice used to warm mulled drinks and chai. Cloves are also coveted for their medicinal properties. Both antiseptic and anesthetic in nature, cloves numb toothaches so that you don’t have to suffer on your way to the dentist. The Numbing Powers of Eugenol Long before modern dentistry, doctors were treating toothaches with cloves, which contain a numbing agent called eugenol. Eugenol is an antiseptic—which means it helps kill the germs causing infection—and an anesthetic—which means it helps dull the pain caused by infection. And it works just as well as over-the-counter numbing agents like Anbesol and Orajel, which feature benzocaine, an antiseptic that can cause allergic reactions among other side effects. A 2006 study published in the Journal of Dentistry and made up of 73 adults showed that cloves worked just as well as benzocaine at numbing the pain caused by toothache and infection. Volunteers were divided into four groups. One group received a clove gel; another was treated with benzocaine, a third with a placebo that resembled the clove gel, and another with a placebo that mimicked benzocaine. After five minutes, the placebos demonstrated no effect on numbing against the pain, but the clove gel and benzocaine worked equally as well. How to Numb with Cloves There are three ways cloves numb toothaches: Whole Cloves: Flush your mouth out with warm salt water. Hold two to three cloves in your mouth as close to the aching tooth as possible. As the cloves soften, chew lightly to release more eugenol into the mouth. Ground or Powdered Cloves: Either purchase whole cloves and grind them with a mortar and pestle, or purchase powdered cloves in the bottle. After rinsing your mouth with warm salt water, apply a dash of ground cloves to the area between your cheek and gums that is smarting. As your saliva mixes with the powder, the numbing will take effect. Clove Oil Compress: If you’re suffering from an extreme toothache, then this is the gentlest clove application. Mix three to four drops of clove essential oil with half a teaspoon of olive oil. Soak a cotton ball or cotton swab in the mixture and gently apply to your sore or toothache. Keep in mind, that cloves numb toothaches but aren’t a replacement for treatment. They should be used to ease the pain until you can seek treatment from a qualified dentist. Note: Cloves are a highly potent herbal medicine that is safe when ingested in small quantities. When ingested in consistently large amounts, they can cause liver and respiratory problems.

In the early 20th century, however, with the discovery of penicillin and subsequent antibiotics, honey fell out of favor…a home remedy at best. But, like fashion, natural remedies enjoy ebbs and flows of popularity, and it looks like honey in wound care is trending again. Fact or Myth: Low Vitamin D Levels Are Linked to Parkinson’s

This is a FACT. Recent research flips the script. Having low vitamin D levels isn’t a symptom of Parkinson’s disease (as previously espoused) but a cause! Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that afflicts 50,000-60,000 Americans every year, is the 14th most common cause of death. It disrupts proper motor function by assaulting dopamine-producing brain cells. Early warning symptoms include loss of smell, tremors, and unexplained changes in sleep patterns. Research keeps on showing that low vitamin D levels are linked to Parkinson’s. The Link between Low D and Parkinson’s Typically, low vitamin D levels are associated with an increased risk for osteoporosis, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. It’s time to add an increased risk for Parkinson’s disease to that list. A study published in the Archives of Neurology followed 3,173 patients over 29 years. At the start of the study, when all patients were Parkinson’s free, researchers analyzed vitamin D levels in patient blood samples. At the end of the 29 years, results showed that those with the lowest levels of vitamin D had the highest risk of Parkinson’s, while those with the highest levels had the lowest associated risk. Another study confirmed that low vitamin D levels are linked to Parkinson’s. Out of 150 Parkinson’s patients, 70% had insufficient vitamin D levels (less than 30 nanograms/ milliliter) and 26% were vitamin D deficient (less than 20 nanograms/ milliliter). Soak Up Some Sun Rays These are frightening statistics for Americans, three-fourths of whom have low vitamin D levels! It’s not surprising. Over the last couple of decades, we’ve been scared away from the sun…and cancer and other life-threatening diseases have risen accordingly! The very best way to ensure adequate vitamin D levels is to expose large surface areas of your skin (legs and arms) to the sun. Be diligent and careful about managing the sun. A sunburn is indeed dangerous, but depending on your skin type and latitudinal coordinates, exposing your sunscreen-free skin to sunlight between 10 and 30 minutes a day will ensure healthy vitamin D levels year round. Although food can’t replace the sun when it comes to manufacturing vitamin D in the body, you can shore up deficiencies by eating oily, coldwater fish like salmon and mackerel. If you have been diagnosed with vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency, then consider taking a supplement made from the active form of vitamin D—vitamin D3.

The Real Problem with Wheat

What’s the real problem with wheat? Yes, it’s important to be on the watch for gluten sensitivity and allergies spawned by hybridization, but the real problem with wheat—we’re talking of the conventional kind—is the way it’s harvested. Many conventional farmers spray wheat with Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup 7-10 days before harvest. The now withered, dead wheat plants are easier to “round up,” pun intended. Not only that, farmers can harvest the wheat earlier and gain bigger profits from a bigger harvest.  According to expert Dr. Stephanie Seneff of MIT, spraying wheat with Roundup causes the wheat to release more seeds, thereby making for a higher yield! Unfortunately, it also makes for disastrous consequences for consumer health. The Noxious Nature of Roundup Roundup is an herbicide that contains a deadly toxin called glyphosate. Farmers began using it with gusto as a drying agent for wheat and barley in the late 1990s, and today the majority of conventional wheat is contaminated. According to the US Department of Agriculture, in 2012 99% of drum wheat, 97% of spring wheat, and 61% of winter wheat was treated with herbicides such as Roundup. And it’s not just America with tainted wheat supplies. The United Kingdom uses Roundup as a wheat desiccant as well. Fortunately, other European countries are a bit more diligent regarding consumer health. Roundup has been banned in the Netherlands, with France following suit. Herbicide companies like Monsanto declare their products safe for human consumption…going so far as having sales agents drink Roundup straight up during their presentations! According to Dr. Seneff, glyphosate is perhaps "the most important factor in the development of multiple chronic diseases and conditions that have become prevalent in Westernized societies.” Monsanto declares glyphosate safe because it kills weeds through a mechanism called the shikimate pathway, which is absent in humans...but not in the bacteria humans depend on for gut health! Research shows that glyphosate impairs the shikimate pathway of beneficial gut bacteria that are responsible for synthesizing essential amino acids. Glyphosate inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, a varied group of enzymes that are responsible for ridding the body of toxins. Bad bacteria is then allowed to overgrow and take over, flooding the body with toxins and jumpstarting chronic inflammation. Over months and years of conventional wheat consumption, our intestinal walls break down and the symptoms of autoimmune diseases start to appear: Gastrointestinal upset Diabetes Autism Heart disease Cancer Multiple sclerosis Infertility Even Alzheimer’s disease! Go Organic Remember, you might not see or feel the effects of herbicides, but they are brewing a health disaster beneath the surface. Tea and Citrus Fruits Lower Ovarian Cancer Risk

Ovarian cancer strikes 6,500 women in the United Kingdom and 20,000 women in the United States each year. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women, accounting for more deaths than any other female reproductive cancer. New research suggests that some very simple dietary adjustments may significantly lower your risk for ovarian cancer. Get Your Flavonoid Fix Researchers from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom analyzed the diets and disease risk of 171,940 women over the course of more than three decades. Lead author Professor Aedin Cassidy of the University’s Department of Nutrition said, "This is the first large-scale study looking into whether habitual intake of different flavonoids can reduce the risk of epithelial ovarian cancer.” Two types of flavonoids stood out as particularly effective at reducing ovarian cancer risk: flavonols (such as those found in tea, red wine, apples, and grapes) and flavanones (such as those found in citrus fruits and juices). Women who consumed flavonoid-rich foods were less likely to develop ovarian cancer. Professor Cassidy explains: "We found that women who consume foods high in two sub-groups of powerful substances called flavonoids -- flavonols and flavanones -- had a significantly lower risk of developing epithelial ovarian cancer.” In fact, women who drank a few cups of black tea daily had a 31% reduced risk for ovarian cancer! The study, which was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, gives us a green light go to drink more tea and consume more citrus fruits.

Antibiotics in Meat Are Increasing…and so is disease

Frontline PBS recently featured the documentary The Trouble with Antibiotics, and according to the latest statistics, antibiotics in meat are increasing…and so is disease! Here’s some of the alarming numbers: The United States uses about 30 million pounds of antibiotics every year to raise food animals in order to encourage growth and protect against the unsanitary living conditions of CAFOs (confined animal feeding operations) This accounts for 80% of all antibiotic use in America! Such exorbitant antibiotic use increases the risk of disease by promoting the development of hardy, antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that can’t be defeated with antibiotics and cause at least 23,000 American deaths a year (out of 2 million infected). Hospital Trends Here’s what’s trending in hospital wards across the country.  We are seeing a rise in the notoriously dangerous, antibiotic-resistant bacteria—methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). MRSA kills more Americans than HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s, emphysema, and homicides…combined! Among those diagnosed with MRSA are the young and healthy, a trend that points to antibiotic-tainted meat as the culprit. And as more meat is bred using antibiotics, more drug-resistant and lethal strains of bacteria are on the rise! For example, hospitals are inundated with cases of antibiotic-resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs). When antibiotics don’t work, the infection spreads to the kidneys, and then to the blood, where sepsis kicks in—responsible for approximately 40,000 American deaths per year! Researchers linked more than 100 drug-resistant UTIs to tainted supermarket meats by using genome sequencing to compare E.coli samples collected from supermarket meats, to E.coli samples from UTI-infected patients. How to Protect Yourself Using antibiotics promotes the mutation of bacteria into hardier, antibiotic-resistant strains and threatens the health of every individual. But building resistance is just one part of the problem. Meat that is tainted with drug-resistant bacteria (as in the UTI cases above) can cause disease if not handled properly and cooked sufficiently. Even scarier, research suggests that half of all supermarket meat is tainted with antibiotic-resistant bacteria! If you are a meat eater, stay away from supermarket meat products and purchase only organic, grass-fed (pasture-raised) meats raised without antibiotics.

Nurse Your Flu with Honeysuckle Tea

It’s flu season again, but before you rush out for a flu shot and shoot yourself up with health-compromising toxins, consider stocking up with honeysuckle tea. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have been prescribing honeysuckle tea to treat flu viruses for over a century, and recent research provides scientific evidence attesting to honeysuckle’s nurturing nature. In fact, the study, published in the journal Cell Research, marks the first time a natural substance has been found to directly attack a virus. Researchers from Nanjing University, China discovered that a molecule in honeysuckle called MIR2911 can suppress the influenza A (IAV) family of viruses, which includes the Spanish flu, swine flu, and avian flu. Even when honeysuckle is mashed up and boiled in water, the molecule’s antiviral properties remain in tact. MIR2911 works by deactivating two genes that have been pinpointed as key to the replication of IAV viruses. Researchers also determined that both the natural and synthetic versions of MIR2911 exhibit the same effect on IAV infections. In addition, researchers declare that MIR2911 also directly targets the Ebola virus. The researchers tested the effect of honeysuckle on mice infected with IAV viruses. Results showed that MIR2911 was effective against H5N1 and H7N9 IAV viruses, thereby demonstrating honeysuckle’s broad spectrum antiviral activity. Because IAV viruses have the ability to mutate and become resistant to previously effective treatments, it’s important to find natural methods that can treat multiple viruses. Honeysuckle seems to be one such alternative, however, human clinical trials need to be conducted to confirm its beneficial effects in humans. In the meantime, sip on some honeysuckle tea this flu season and do a little self-experimentation. It’s safe, side-effect free, and sweet-tasting!

Lack of Access to Quality Care Increases Cancer Risk

This just in: Harvard researchers have discovered that nearly 1 in 20 cancer patients die within a month of surgery…a much higher percentage of death than that cited by previous smaller studies. While advanced cancer stood out as the primary risk factor, social and economic circumstances also featured as probable causes, leading researchers to conclude that lack of access to quality care increases cancer risk. Frightening New Cancer Stats The study, presented October 2014 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology Quality Care Symposium in Boston, included 1.1 million cancer sufferers who had surgery between the years 2004 and 2011. Cancers studied included some of the most fatal: lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, thyroid, esophageal, pancreatic, endometrial, ovarian, head and neck, liver, bladder/kidney, melanoma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Within just one month of post-op, 5% (that’s 53,500 patients) had died. Single, older, uninsured, minority, male, and less educated individuals, as well as those with advanced cancer, were at the most risk for death. Specifically… Men had an 11% increased risk Older patients had a 2% increased risk Minority patients a 13% increased risk Advanced cancer patients an 89% increased risk Married, insured, wealthier, and more educated patients fared much better. Specifically… Married patients had a 20% decreased risk Insured patients a 12% decreased risk Higher income patients a 5% decreased risk Better educated patients a 2% decreased risk Notably, 40% of the patients were younger than 65 and not eligible for Medicare, which calls into question the access some of these patients had to quality health care. Lead author Brandon Mahal, a research fellow at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, explains: "We believe that disproportionate access to quality health care is the major driver of the disparities in one-month cancer surgical deaths observed in this study." One more reason to be ever-vigilant in securing and safeguarding your health.

The 20-year high school reunion I attended a little over a week ago has had me (and all of my girlfriends!) thinking and talking a lot about anti-aging. I feel incredibly lucky to have such a close group of friends I grew up with and still keep in touch with on a regular basis. Whenever we all get together I feel like I am 13-years old again! Well, let me rephrase that.... My spirit is the same as it was when I was 13, but my body is not (sigh). However, I know for a fact that I can slow the aging process by the foods I choose to eat---or not eat. When I started my "whole food" nutrition journey back in 1998  I was just 22-years old, and so I definitely did not have "anti-aging" on my mind. But as I approach my 40th birthday, I most certainly do now! The thought of aging can be a little scary, but when I look at someone like Mimi Kirk (in the photo to the left) who is living an incredibly full and vibrant life---and who looks absolutely stunning at 75 years old!!!---I know that aging gracefully is absolutely possible. But one thing is for certain... you won't age gracefully eating donuts and potato chips! I can also tell you that anyone who is over the age of about 30 years old and who enjoys vibrant health and still looks good is taking care of themselves and also paying attention to good nutrition (for the record, the beautiful Mimi Kirk has been a raw food vegan since her mid-thirties).
