Fact or Myth: Can Cell Phones Increase Your Risk of Cancer?

This is a Fact.

Just ask your cell phone provider. Iphone users can refer to the safety manual, which specifies: “When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 millimeters (5/8 inch) away from the body.” Blackberry warns its customers as well, cautioning: “Keep the BlackBerry device at least 0.98 inch (25 millimeters) from your body when the BlackBerry device is transmitting.”

Why the word of warning? Common sense would suggest that the farther you hold the phone away from your ear, or face, or any other body part for that matter, the lower your risk of radiation exposure. But what exactly are the dangers of radiation?

On May 31, 2011 the International Agency for Cancer Research (IACR), a division of the World Health Organization (WHO), officially categorized mobile phones as a “carcinogenic hazard,” in the same category as lead, exhaust fumes, and chloroform.

The verdict was reached after 31 scientists from 14 countries analyzed peer-reviewed studies on cell phones and cancer safety. The scientists reported that cell phones were indeed, “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” after discovering that long-term cell phone use increased one’s risk of developing cancerous brain tumors.

The evidence did not, however, reach a conclusive verdict as to the affect of cell phones and cancer radiation on other types of cancers. Unfortunately, it takes decades of exposure to radiation before an exact understanding of the consequences can be determined. cell phones and cancer Another consideration is that cancer, especially brain cancer, develops over a long period of time, which makes it difficult to come up with conclusive findings in a timely manner.

Dr Henry Lai, a research professor in bioengineering at the University of Washington who has studied radiation for over 30 years believes it is, “a good idea to give the public some sort of warning that long-term exposure to radiation from your cell phone could possibly cause cancer.”

Cell phone and cancer radiation is similar to the radiation emitted by microwaves, much more low-powered than X-ray radiation, but still dangerous.

Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles explains, “What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain. So in addition to leading to a development of cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we hold our cell phones.”

Results from the largest international study on cell phones and cancer radiation were released in 2010. It was shown that participants who used cell phones for 10 years had double the rate of brain glioma, a type of malignant brain tumor.

The National Institutes of Health reports that only 50 minutes spent on the phone can stimulate brain cells, and although the exact effects of artificial stimulation of brain cells is unknown, research suggests it is not positive.

The European Environmental Agency believes cell phones are as dangerous as smoking, asbestos and leaded gasoline, and it is actively campaigning for more studies on the risks of cell phone usage. And no studies on just how cell phones may be affecting children and young adults have been conducted, although it is safe to assume that the risks are even greater.

Children’s skulls and scalps are thinner than adult’s, and children’s cells divide at a faster rate. What this means is that radiation is able to permeate more deeply into a child’s brain.

So what can you do to protect yourself from cell phones and cancer radiation? Follow the guidance of cell phone manufacturers and keep the phone at a safe distance. Cell phones emit the most radiation when they are working hard to find a cell tower, so avoid using cell phones in areas with a weak signal.
