Fact or Myth: Does Green Snot Mean Sinus Infection?

This is a MYTH. “Got green snot! It’s a sinus infection!” —a comma refrain among well-intentioned health enthusiasts, and even some out-of-touch health practitioners. The green-snot-sinus-infection connection is nothing more than medical myth…and we’re busting it apart today! There’s simply no scientific evidence that proves antibiotics shorten the duration of illness when green snot is present. Clear Is for Viral…Green Is for Bacterial…NOT! Unfortunately, diagnosing illness isn’t as easy as looking to snot color. Clear nasal discharge doesn’t guarantee a viral infection any more than green points to a bacterial infection. It’s human tendency to run to the doctor for an antibiotic at the first sign of a cold. Chances are you’ve got a virus of some sort, and that pill won’t do a bit of good. In fact, you’ll have to contend with the side effects: nausea and diarrhea, as well as increased resistance to antibiotics—meaning when you really need the drug, you’re body won’t respond to its effects! The green-snot-equals-sinus-infection myth was broken by a 1984 study that showed that antibiotics didn’t improve the symptoms of an illness marked by green nasal discharge. Researchers separated 142 children with green snot into two groups. One group received antibiotic treatment and the other received a placebo. Results showed that the drugs had no influence on “potentially pathogenic organisms” or on symptoms. Additional studies confirm these findings. Where the Green Comes From Your snot doesn’t turn green from bacteria. Microbiologists believe that when an infection takes hold (bacterial or viral) your white blood cells release enzymes to break down microorganisms. These enzymes contain iron, which imparts a greenish hue. Your snot also has the tendency to turn green the longer it remains clogged in your nasal cavities. In the same way your snot may be green in the morning after a night spent in your nose, it is also likely to turn green due to congestion. Sinuses Got You Down? If you’re suffering from the headache, stuffy nose, nasal discharge, facial pressure, fever, and cough symptoms common to both viral and bacterial infections, the best thing to do is to wait it out for 10 days. Viral infections typically clear up within that time. If symptoms get worse after five to seven days, or last longer than 10 days, then you might have a bacterial infection and should see a doctor for further diagnosis. Chances are a little TLC will clear up your symptoms no matter what color snot you’ve got. Clear out your sinuses with a Neti pot, which will shorten the duration of the illness and help you breathe better in the meantime.

Fact or Myth: Does Fluoride Protect Against Tooth Decay?

This is a MYTH. From toothpaste to mouthwash, professional dental treatments to drinking water, fluoride makes an appearance as an enamel-protecting ingredient that shields your pearly whites from tooth decay. More and more research, however, suggests that not only does fluoride not protect against tooth decay, but it also instigates a host of health problems, from brain damage to bone cancer. The Myth Fluoride has dominated the dental decree since the 1960s. Conventional wisdom holds that fluoride converts the primary mineral in tooth enamel, hydroxapaite, into a tougher, more decay-resistant coating called fluorapatite. Turns out that this coating is too thin—100 times thinner than previously thought—to provide any sort of protection. A 2010 study published in the American Chemical Society’s journal Langmuir revealed that fluorapatite is actually only 6 nanometers thick. For perspective, you’d need 100,000 layers to reach the width of a human hair! This minuscule layer is easily worn away from simple chewing, leading scientists to wonder what good fluoride really does . . . especially since it’s actually a potent neurotoxin. The Fact Americans spend over $50 billion a year to treat cavities, despite the fact that water supplies, toothpastes, and mouthwashes are flooded with fluoride. Fluoride doesn’t seem to be living up to its reputation as cavity fighter. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people in Europe have just as good, if not better, teeth than Americans do. What’ the difference? The United States adds fluoride to over 50% of its public water supplies—all in the name of healthy teeth. While taking a sip of an organic energy drink made of exotic ingredients like ginseng and acai seems like a healthy alternative to downing a traditional energy drink loaded up with artificial colors and sweeteners, be careful not to kid yourself. Better doesn’t mean healthy…or even safe! Organic energy drinks are packed with sugar and caffeine and can strain your heart. Not to mention, there’s no guarantee that the advertised benefit—“All-natural energy to sustain you throughout your day”—is actually achieved. Organic Energy Drinks: The Promise Organic energy drinks are marketed as a side-effect-free energy boost that can improve your health with an infusion of vitamins and minerals—minus the artificial ingredients found in non-organic energy drinks. Organic Energy Drinks: The Reality We’re not discounting the pluses of going organic all the way, but there are some safety factors to consider when drinking organic energy drinks. High in Calories and Sugar: Don’t be fooled. You are still getting an influx of calories and sugar. The sugar sources are more natural than the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and other artificial sweeteners found in regular energy drinks, but you’re still overwhelming your body with sugar and possibly promoting insulin resistance. High in Caffeine: But I want the caffeine! That’s fine, as long as your body can tolerate it. Either way, you’re probably better off getting your boost of caffeine from coffee or tea. Steven Meredith, a health researcher at Johns Hopkins University clarifies: "Caffeine is caffeine, whether it's synthesized in a lab or whether it's synthesized in nature. It's still going to have the same pharmacological effects when you consume it." Herb Sensitivity: If you are at all sensitive to herbs and other ingredients, check those labels carefully to make sure you do not have a reaction. Some experts maintain that the concentration of herbs, vitamins, and minerals are mixed in such trace amounts as to have little to no effect. In a Los Angeles Times article, John Higgins, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, explained: "There is not a lot of evidence that these drinks have the benefits they are supposed to. They are supposed to increase energy levels and even boost memory. But I've looked at many of these ingredients, and they have not shown that they do what they are supposed to do." The majority of those nutrients hitch a ride with your urine right out of your system! Organic Energy Drinks: The Alternative Instead of relying on organic energy drinks for fuel, try a morning cup of green tea or simple black coffee. Get an energy boost from whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables. The sugar in fruits and vegetables is mediated by the fiber content in these whole foods so that you aren’t subjected to a spike in blood sugar levels and you can sustain your energy for longer.

Fact or Myth: Are Artificial Food Dyes Dangerous?

This is a FACT. Ever wonder how your macaroni got so orange and your fruit punch so red? How about the strawberry-colored yogurt you like so much? Or even your purple-tinted vitamin water that’s supposed to be refueling your body with electrolytes? As tantalizing as these colorful foods and beverages may be, they are loaded with artificial food dyes that have been shown to contain cancer-causing compounds. Despite increasing tumor risk, allergies, and behavior and mood disorders, artificial food dyes are prevalent in baked goods, cereal, processed and packaged foods, candy, and pharmaceuticals. Food manufacturers use five times more artificial food dyes today than they did 30 years ago…and despite warnings from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the FDA refuses to ban food dye from food, drugs, and personal care items. Red Dye Red food dye makes an appearance in candy, cereal, desserts, sausage, and maraschino cherries. Red dye #2 (found in Florida oranges) has been shown to increase bladder tumor risk. Red dye #3 (aka Erythrosine) has been banned from external use products but is still a common component in the foods we ingest. It is considered a carcinogen and has been linked to allergies, learning impairments, mood disorders, and hyperactivity in kids. The most common food dye , red dye #40—labeled FD&C Red No. 40, Allura Red, and Red 40—is derived from petroleum and has been associated with side effects such as: Hives Swelling of the mouth Hypersensitivity Cancer Several studies indicate that red food dye damages the DNA of mice. It’s safe to assume our DNA doesn’t fare much better. Yellow and Blue Dye Yellow and blue food dyes are still undergoing testing, but preliminary results suggest that these colorful dyes contribute to behavioral issues in kids, worsen allergy and asthma symptoms, and cause adrenal, brain, and kidney tumors. Avoid… Yellow #5 (Tartrazine) Yellow #6 Blue #1 Blue #2 (Indigotine) Green 3 Orange B If you see “lakes” listed in the ingredient list, beware! This is just food dye in water-insoluble form, and it’s just as dangerous! The FDA Fails Again Since the 1970s, researchers have been studying the link between artificial food colors and ADHD. An analysis of 21 studies found that artificial food dyes influence hyperactivity, restlessness, and attention problems. Removing food dyes proved to be ¼ to ½ as effective as Ritalin and other pharmaceutical stimulants in reducing symptoms, which begs the question—if food dyes were no longer part of our food source, would ADHD meds and similar drugs ever be needed? A 2007 British study published in The Lancet confirmed the link between food dyes and behavioral problems. The United Kingdom, as well as other European countries, responded by phasing out the use of food coloring in foods. Companies like Kraft and Mars have removed food dyes from their processed foods sold in Europe. It’s a different story in the United States. Your mac and cheese and Dove chocolate bars still contain harmful food dyes! And why not? The FDA refuses to ban these ingredients, so why should food manufacturers bother to remove them? Take Control You like a colorful plate…and so do we! Remember, you don’t have to sacrifice your health to add a bit of color to your life. Color (and flavor) your food with safe natural food coloring like beet juice, paprika, carotene, red cabbage, and turmeric.

Fact or Myth: Is It Okay to Cook with Olive Oil?

The answer is YES…and NO! Olive oil has been the recipient of much acclaim—loaded with antioxidants like vitamin E it protects the heart and lowers your risk for cancer—and much bad press—cook with olive oil and you’re exposing your body to toxic carcinogens. It’s time to dispel the myths…you can cook with olive oil (and without consequence) as long as you are cognizant of smoke point. Oils and Oxidation Vegetable oils are prone to oxidation with age, and especially when exposed to air and light. Heat accelerates the oxidation process. When vegetable oils, like olive oil, oxidize, their molecular structure degrades, fat molecules are damaged, and harmful trans fats are formed. The nutrient profile of vegetable oil is further depleted as antioxidants are destroyed through the oxidation process. Polyunsaturated fats like corn oil and sunflower oil are the most susceptible to oxidation, while saturated fats like coconut oil and butter are least likely to oxidize, and hold up well when exposed to high heat. Olive oil, a monounsaturated fat, falls somewhere in the middle. Olive oil’s high concentration of monounsaturated oleic acid helps keep the heart healthy and may even protect against certain cancers. When heated beyond its smoke point, however, olive oil oxidizes into cancer-causing oxygen radicals like ketones, peroxides, aldehydes, and hydroperoxides. Safety First Extra-virgin olive oil is the least refined olive oil and is created from the first pressing of the olives. It imparts the most delicate flavor and is the most nutrient dense of the olive oils. It also has a significantly lower smoke point than refined olive oil, which is extracted with the use of chemicals and has a lower nutrient profile overall. The smoke point of extra-virgin olive oil is approximately 375°F ( or 191°C) whereas the smoke point of refined olive oil is around 460°F. In fact, any refined oil has a higher smoke point than its virgin relative, and is a better option for cooking…especially at higher heats. As long as you heat olive oil within the confines of its smoke point, you’re safe. For instance, vegetables are typically sautéed at 300°F, well within olive oil’s smoke point. Should you wish to cook at higher heats, then trade in the olive oil for the coconut oil, which imparts a plethora of health benefits of its own!

Green Tea Boosts Working Memory

We’ve got one more reason for you to drink green tea (as if you needed another!). Yes, it still helps protect against heart disease and stroke. Yes, it still helps keep cancer at bay and alleviates the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. And yes, it still helps protect against and treat type 2 diabetes. But recent research confirms it’s also good for the human brain. Turns out that green tea extract boosts working memory and might be a helpful remedy for psychiatric disorders such as dementia. How Green Tea Impacts Brain Function Previous studies have established a link between green tea and improved cognitive function, but prior to a recent study published in the journal Psychopharmacology, researchers didn’t know just how green tea boosts working memory. Research teams led by Professor Christoph Beglinger from the University Hospital of Basel and Professor Stefan Borgwardt from the Psychiatric University Clinics in Switzerland divided healthy male volunteers into two groups. Group one received a milk whey-based soft drink enhanced with 27.5 grams of green tea extract before performing working memory tasks. (Working memory is the active, immediate part of your memory system.) Group two received a placebo soft drink. Participants were not privy to whether they were drinking green tea or the placebo. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), researchers saw that subjects who drank the green tea extract showed increased connectivity between the parietal and frontal cortex. In other words, these two areas of the brain were better able to “talk to” and influence one another. Increased connectivity corresponded with enhanced cognitive performance on working memory tasks. Researchers explained: "The present study shows that green tea extract enhances functional connectivity from the parietal to the frontal cortex during working memory processing in healthy controls. Interestingly, this effect on effective connectivity was related to the green tea induced improvement in cognitive performance." Enjoy a Cup of Green Tea a Day Green tea originates from China and India and is extracted from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis bush. It owes its unbeatable concentration of antioxidants and potency to its unoxidized leaves. Most other teas, such as black teas, go through a fermentation process that removes some antioxidants in the process. Try to buy organic green tea whenever you can, and be sure to steep for at least three minutes to make sure all those healthy catechins have brewed for full benefit!

New Cholesterol Guidelines May Dramatically Increase Statin Use

Last year, the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) got together to develop new cholesterol guidelines to better determine who is suited for one of the statin (cholesterol-lowering drugs) on the market. This sounds like a conscientious effort on the part of the medical community to temper the use of statin drugs (which a scandalous 1 in 4 Americans over the age of 40 takes) to those who can actually benefit. Unfortunately, the panel—made up of volunteer “experts”—was affiliated with over 50 different drug companies, hinting at an underlying motive to keep statin use going strong. And going strong it will be, suggest Duke researchers, who estimate that these new cholesterol guidelines will hook 13 million more Americans on statins. What the New Guidelines Entail According to the new cholesterol guidelines, you’re a shoe-in for statins if you answer yes to any of the following questions: Do you have heart disease? Do you have diabetes? (either type 1 or type 2) Is your LDL cholesterol above 190? Is your 10-year risk of a heart attack greater than 7.5 percent? (Determined by a cardiovascular risk calculator that has been shown to overestimate risk by 75-150%!) There has been an outcry against the new guidelines by medical and alternative health practitioners who fear that increased use of statins will have more deleterious than helpful effects. What Duke Researchers Say Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2005-2010, Duke researchers ascertained the new cholesterol guidelines will increase the eligibility for statins in the United States by 12.8 million. What individuals account for such a drastic increase? Older adults WITHOUT heart disease! Specifically… Americans ages 40 to 75 who are eligible for statin use will increase from 43.2 million to 56 million (a difference of 12.8) Males ages 60-75 eligible for statins will increase by 57% Females ages 60-75 eligible for statins will increase by 33% The New England Journal of Medicine reports: “…the new guidelines would recommend statin therapy for more adults who would be expected to have future cardiovascular events (higher sensitivity) but would also include many adults who would not have future events (lower specificity).” Why You Should Be Cautious of Statins There are some individuals who can benefit from statin use, but statins are causing more harm than good to the vast majority of drugged patients. Statins can actually damage your heart, instigate diabetes, disrupt hormone production, impair sexual function, lead to cognitive decline, and exacerbate muscle problems, among many other adverse side effects. How about preventing heart disease the old fashioned way…with plenty of exercise, hearty nutrition, and healthy vitamin D levels from safe sun exposure? Avoid the Western prescription of numbing the symptom and instead nip the root cause of heart disease in the bud. Some heart healthy exercise and nutrition can do the trick far better than a drug developed mainly for Big Pharma profit.

A Miracle Cancer Drug on the Horizon

In 1971, President Richard Nixon turned the eyes of the nation to the importance of cancer research with the signing of the National Cancer Act. Here we are 43 years later, and it seems we may just be on the verge of a comprehensive cancer cure. Stanford University researchers have discovered a way to kill virtually every type of cancer cell, leaving many to declare that a miracle cancer drug is right around the corner. The Battle Is On Our healthy cells depend on a protein called CD47 to keep them from being preyed upon by the immune system. This protein acts as a “do not eat” signal so that healthy cells remain intact. Unfortunately, the CD47 protein doesn’t pick sides, and is found in abundance in cancer cells, where it also acts as a shield against the immune system. The immune system bypasses harmful cancer cells, allowing them to proliferate unchecked. Understanding the mechanisms of CD47, researchers set out to build an antibody that could block this protein, thereby allowing the immune system to destroy the cancer cells. Scientists have used this antibody to succesfully treat lymphomas and leukemias, but the most recent research indicates that the antibody’s effectiveness may just extend to all types of cancer. Stanford University biologist Irving Weissman explained to Science Magazine: "What we've shown is that CD47 isn't just important on leukemias and lymphomas. It's on every single human primary tumor that we tested... We showed that even after the tumor has taken hold, the antibody can either cure the tumor or slow its growth and prevent metastasis." Going to Market Researchers tested on mice implanted with human breast, ovary, colon, prostate, bladder, and liver tumors, all of which responded to treatment. Thus far, side effects include the destruction of healthy cells alongside cancer cells. Remember, healthy cells contain CD47 too, and when this protein is blocked, the immune system doesn’t discriminate between good and bad. The next step is to test this miracle cancer drug on humans. Cork Tree Extract May Fight Pancreatic Cancer

An Ancient Chinese Healing Herb The bark of the Amur cork tree, also known as Phellodendron, has been a go-to herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries. It imparts an anti-inflammatory effect that has been shown to treat everything from osteoarthritis to cirrhosis of the liver. It’s the most medicinally potent when extracted from a 10-year old Phellodendron tree. Once the tree is peeled of bark, it dies, rendering Phellodendron bark especially valuable. Its inherent antibacterial and antimicrobial properties make it an effective weapon against bacteria, viruses, and skin fungi. Cork tree extract has also been shown to: Lower blood pressure Heal ulcers Subdue, relax, and sedate Lower blood sugar and treat diabetes Promote weight loss Alleviate diarrhea Treat meningitis, tuberculosis, and pneumonia Soothe eye infections Remedy psoriasis Reduce skin redness and swelling Phellodendron for Pancreatic Cancer Researchers at UT Health Science Center stumbled upon the possibility of phellodendron as a pancreatic cancer treatment while researching the bark’s effect on prostate tumors. Researchers discovered that prostate and pancreatic tumors share similar pathways, and cork tree extract seems to block these pathways and suppress the scarring that keeps anti-cancer drugs from working. Excessive scarring around the tumor gland (known as fibrotic tissue) prevents cancer drugs from actually reaching the cancer, rendering treatment ineffective. There are no drugs that currently suppress these pathways, which not only cause scarring but also promote the release of Cox-2 that rages systemic inflammation throughout the body. Cork tree extract, not only blocks the pathways and prevents scarring, but it also suppresses this inflammation. Research, though preliminary, is promising. Liver and kidney tumors also succumb to scarring and the subsequent resistance to drugs, and researchers are hopeful that cork tree extract may show a similar effect on a variety of these cancer tumors. Cork tree extract is available as a supplement in capsule form and has already been established as safe for consumption. The 24 participants in the UT Health Science Center trial likewise experienced no adverse side effects.

Cocoa Flavonols for Heart Health

The world’s been going kookoo for cocoa, and researchers are catching on. As more and more people trade in the milk chocolate for dark—rich in cocoa flavonols, antioxidants, and minerals—scientists want to know the extent of cocoa’s health benefits, minus the sugar and fat. Smaller studies suggest that cocoa flavanols found in dark chocolate impart heart-healthy benefits like improved… Blood pressure Insulin sensitivity Artery health The study, funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and Mar’s Inc. (the makers of Snickers and M&Ms), will be the first large-scale test of cocoa flavanols. The Chocolate Pill The Mars company has patented a way to extract flavanols from cocoa into capsule form. Eating chocolate in a pill takes away the fun and taste, but allows researchers to test the benefits without the fat and sugar that comes in candy bar form. Eighteen thousand American men and women will take either dummy pills, or capsules filled with active cocoa flavanols twice a day for four years. Researchers will also be testing the effectiveness of multivitamins on cancer prevention in healthy men and women. Participants will likewise either take a placebo pill, or a broad spectrum multivitamin. The Benefits of Dark Chocolate Don’t rush out and stock up on candy bars just yet. You’d have to eat heaps of dark chocolate to equal the flavanol power of the chocolate capsules.
