GSE: A Natural Diabetes Treatment

Did You Know…a new study offers hope of a natural diabetes treatment for one of the most deadly diseases of the modern age?

Researchers at Wayne State are studying a potential natural diabetes treatment that is without harmful side effects.  This is incredibly good news for the 26 million Americans now classified as diabetic (90 to 95% have type 2 diabetes).

“Type 2 diabetes is one of the major chronic diseases of modern societies,” says Gloria Heppner, Ph.D., associate vice president for research at Wayne State University.  The Wayne State researchers believe that grape skin extract (GSE) might effectively manage type 2 diabetes.

Halting the Great Diabetes Epidemic Naturally

If current trends continue, one in three American adults will have diabetes by 2050.  A person diagnosed with diabetes will die up to six years earlier than someone without the disease—so finding safe, effective natural diabetes treatment is essential.

Scientists at Wayne State received $2.1 million in funding from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health, indicating that the government may be beginning to recognize the importance of alternative health approaches to chronic diseases like diabetes.

Kequan Zhou, Ph.D., lead investigator on the study, believes the research will lead to the development of “a safe, targeted nutritional intervention to support diabetes prevention and treatment.”

Resveratrol’s Remarkable Benefits

One component found in GSE is well known to have remarkable effects: resveratrol.  Found in certain fruits and vegetables (and abundantly in grape skins and seeds), resveratrol is a natural substance made by plants in response to stress and environmental dangers.

When ingested by humans, resveratrol appears to produce many of the same benefits as exercise and caloric restriction.  One crucial benefit, especially for diabetics, is resveratrol’s ability to normalize insulin levels.  That’s because type 2 diabetes interferes with the body’s ability to use insulin.  At first, the body compensates by increasing insulin production.

But ultimately, the pancreas cannot generate enough insulin to counteract the insulin resistance that characterizes type 2 diabetes.  This is why diabetics have to supplement and support the body’s insulin production—and this is why GSE could be so valuable as a natural means of insulin regulation!

GSE Treats Multiple Health Conditions

According to Web M.D., there’s strong evidence that grape seed extract is beneficial for a number of health conditions, including:

  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • Poor circulation (chronic venous insufficiency)
  • High cholesterol
  • Swelling caused by injury
  • Eye disease related to diabetes

Researchers are also investigating the potential of GSE to lower the risks of some cancers, but no clear findings are yet available for these questions.

Boosting Your Health with Grape Seed Extract

GSE is considered generally safe, and is readily available in health food stores and via online retailers.  “There is no firmly established dose of grape seed extract,” advises Web M.D., but “doses of between 100-300 milligrams/day have been used in studies and are prescribed in some European countries.”
