Find out How to Get Better Sleep and Protect Yourself and Your Family from the Dangers and Effects of Sleep Deprivation — “America’s Top Health Problem”
How to get better sleep is crucial for your well-being. For over a decade, doctors have warned us that lack of sleep is a deadly epidemic. They say it could very well be America’s top health problem.
Past studies have linked the effects of sleep deprivation to heart disease…obesity…depression …diabetes…a weakened immune system…loss of mental agility…a tired and aching body…color blindness…dark circles under the eyes…confusion…hallucinations…tremors…nausea … irritability…headaches…incoherent speech…and even death.
Now we can add cancer to the list, based on a study published recently in the journal Cancer. Researchers from Case Western University School of Medicine (CWUSM) say they’ve found a link between lack of sleep and tumors of the colon:
Those who get fewer than 6 hours of sleep a night increase their chances of developing a precancerous tumor of the colon by 50% compared to those that get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep.
More Than One-Third of Americans Get Fewer Than 7 Hours of Sleep Every Night
An estimated 30% to 50% of the population is affected by insomnia and 10% suffer from chronic insomnia. The National Sleep Foundation states that women report insomnia 1.3 times more than men—and those over age 65 report insomnia 1.5 times more than younger people.
“The association between inadequate amounts of sleep and the precancerous tumors remained even after researchers adjusted data to include family history, smoking, and obesity,” said the chief researcher on the study.
Here’s why this is so disturbing, and how prolonged sleep loss poses an even bigger threat:
\Left untreated, precancerous tumors in the colon can become malignant. For those who sleep enough, the body’s own deep healing processes during sleep can prevent this from occurring. But for those who don’t sleep enough, the deep healing doesn’t happen or can’t complete itself. Inflammation continues, sometimes resulting in cancer.
The CWUSM researchers suggest that tumor formation can result from inadequate levels of the DNA-repairing “sleep hormone” known as melatonin.
If you’ve ever suffered from insomnia or the effects of sleep deprivation, you’ve probably heard of melatonin. Melatonin supplements have gained popularity in recent years because they’ve been recommended as a sleep aid for the more than 1/3 of Americans who aren’t getting enough sleep on their own. Yet, for many who try it …
…melatonin fails to work regularly or at all.
Finally, researchers have discovered why this is so, and how to solve it.
Find Out Why Melatonin Often Doesn’t Work—and How It Can Be Made to Be Effective to Help You Get Better Sleep at Night
Melatonin is definitely safer than sleeping pills because the latter have numerous dangerous side effects. The problem is that for many people, melatonin pills don’t live up to expectations. Until recently, no one has understood why.
Here’s how melatonin functions in the body: it’s a hormone produced in the pineal gland and secreted at night or in the dark. It regulates not only the sleeping cycle but many other critical functions, including—according to the study in Cancer—tumor prevention.
It makes sense that melatonin would promote healthy sleep, since our exposure to light and darkness can interfere with melatonin production. In other words, overexposure to artificial light can lead to too little melatonin, and too little sleep.
Do melatonin tablets—taken before bedtime—help bring easier, better, and more consistent sleep?
Unfortunately, all too often…they do not.
Finally, some researchers, including Dr. Al Sears, have examined why melatonin fails. Dr. Sears has been an integrative medical doctor for over 20 years, traveling the world in search of breakthrough natural therapies. He’s written 14 books and speaks as a health expert on radio programs, ABC News, and CNN.
According to Dr. Sears, the reason melatonin pills so often disappoint is because their effectiveness can occur only in a very narrow window of time…and they often take more than an hour to take effect. That means an hour of tossing and turning, waiting for sleep, and worrying about not getting enough rest. Oftentimes, melatonin users get up out of bed in frustration. In so doing, they miss the melatonin window altogether…and that leads to another sleepless night.
That’s exactly the scenario that melatonin was meant to prevent. But in actuality, the problem is not the melatonin. It’s the pills.
Pills are simply not an effective delivery system for this hormone-based sleep aid, says Dr. Sears. He and his team recommend a rapid-delivery method that allows melatonin to enter the bloodstream and start taking effect almost immediately. With rapid-delivery, you’re able to get the sleep you need right away, instead of an hour or more after you ingest the melatonin. As a result, you gain better long-term sleep patterns and overall health.
Sleep, Obesity, and Long-Term Health Problems
Finding out how to get better sleep is essential, because the health consequences of not doing so can be dreadful. For example, research at the University of Chicago (and several subsequent studies) showed a link between too little sleep, weight gain, and diabetes. Inadequate sleep alters the body’s hormone production. As a result appetite spikes, feelings of fullness get blocked, and the body’s response to sugar is thrown out of whack. All of these changes can lead to weight gain and a higher risk of diabetes.
Other major health problems related to lack of sleep include:
- High blood pressure
- Heart attack
- Heart failure
- Psychiatric problems, including depression and other mood disorders
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
- Mental impairment
- Injury from accidents
- Relationship problems from disrupting bed partner’s sleep
- Poor quality of life
The good news is that a simple solution has been found for how to get better sleep and the many effects of sleep deprivation can be reversed, once you start sleeping more. Your body begins to heal itself.
For example, the University of Chicago study on sleep and appetite found that when subjects slept 10 hours for 2 consecutive nights, their hormone levels normalized and their hunger and appetite ratings dropped by almost 25 percent.
Melatonin Works Best in Synergy with Two Botanical Agents
Unlike the risky sleep medications which should rarely be combined, botanical sleep aids often become more powerful when they work in synergy with other botanical agents. That’s why Dr. Sears’s research team studied other potential sleep-inducing herbs from around the world.
Their research resulted in 2 remarkable discoveries:
- A botanical substance that has been long recognized in Jamaica as a safe and powerful relaxant. Dr. Sears had the opportunity to observe the surprising effects of this relaxant on a research trip to Jamaica.
- A fruit used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has the unique ability to help people “shut off” their minds. This unique plant contains substances that relax the hippocampus region of the brain, soothing the mind and calming the emotions. The Journal of Ethnopharmcology published a study showing this fruit had a sedating quality useful in treating insomnia or anxiety.
When these powerful herbs and relaxants from the plant and mineral world are combined with melatonin, they produce a synergistic formula that…
==> Relaxes the hippocampus to soothe the mind and emotions
==> Boosts your body’s own melatonin production
==> Regulates thyroid function
==> Strengthens your immune system
==> Protects cells from free radicals
Unlike pharmaceutical sleep aids, these plant-based remedies are not habit-forming and have no side effects. Furthermore, every element supports how to get better sleep and overall health and is 100% safe for long-term use.
Sleep is a Necessity…Not a Luxury
Whether you experience occasional sleeplessness or suffer from chronic insomnia, the health risks can be serious. That’s why the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has adopted the slogan, “Sleep is a necessity…not a luxury.”
Getting enough sleep on a consistent basis is proven to help prevent some of the worst health problems, including cancer. Find out the details of this newly-developed, sleep-inducing, plant-based remedy—and discover how to use it for how to get better sleep now and enable your body to heal itself by stopping sleep deprivation.
