Energy Adjustment Work: Fraud or Fact?

Did You Know…that the hottest Hollywood healing trend may actually offer some real wellness benefits?

Energy adjustment work is a hot Hollywood trend that’s captured the admiration of celebs like Gywneth Patrow and Halle Berry… but does it really work?

What Is Energy Adjustment?

Energy adjustment workers use an intuitive sixth sense to move energy through the body in order to treat conditions such as:

  Pain
  Insomnia
  Weight loss
  Grief
  Anxiety
  Depression

Energy work operates on the premise that our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual wellness are interconnected, and that illness can be the manifestation of imbalance in any of these systems.  Although its recent surge in popularity may make it seem new, the ancient Japanese wrote about energy-based touch therapy thousands of years ago in the Tibetan Sutras.

Energy adjustment work regained popularity in the 1800s thanks to the efforts of Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese monk.  In the last 10 years it has been a go-to healing aid among nurses, physicians, and rehabilitation therapists, mainly in the form of reiki.  Reiki is a type of energy adjustment that promotes stress reduction and relaxation in order to activate the body’s self-healing mechanisms and treat and prevent disease.  Clinical observations suggest that Reiki:

Helps alleviate both chronic and acute pain
 Greatly enhances relaxation
 Imparts stress management benefits

Reiki, along with other forms of energy adjustment work, is based on the idea that life force energy makes up and flows through all the life forms on this planet. Reiki practitioners focus on the 7 chakras, or energy centers, that comprise the human body. According to energy adjustment healers, if your chakras are blocked, then your life energy cannot flow free, and pain and disease may develop.

Energy adjustment workers typically use a combination of light and no-touch therapies to direct healing energy from their hands to the patient’s body in order to increase energy flow, relax muscles, and release any stagnant energy that might be causing emotional or physical distress.

Can Energy Adjustment Really Help?

According to a recent review of 66 clinical trials published in the International Journal of Behavioral Medicine, energy adjustment therapies such as reiki can:

  • Decrease the intensity of pain in general
  • Decrease the intensity of pain for hospitalized patients, such as cancer patients
Reiki Benefits

A 2015 study conducted by researchers at Huddersfield University in England showed that Reiki significantly improved the quality of life of cancer patients by lowering anxiety, depression, and disease.  Other studies have found that reiki :

Reduced anxiety and pain during colonoscopies and
abdominal hysterectomies
Lowered fatigue, anxiety, and pain in cancer patients

Energy adjustment therapies may offer some relief from pain and anxiety by going beyond site-specific treatment and rebalancing the energy flow throughout the body.  Beyond the expense, they are entirely safe, so if your budget allows for it, you may want to explore a healing session.
