Go-Go-Gogi Berries!

Did You Know…that goji berries can rejuvenate your internal repair system by enhancing stem cell function?

The goji berry, also know as the Chinese wolfberry, has featured prominently in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 5000 years.  These shriveled, raisin-like berries grow wild in China, Mongolia, and the Himalayas in Tibet, and are commercially cultivated mainly in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region of China.

Goji berries are rich in carotenoids (goji berries have more beta-carotene than carrots!), vitamins C, B1, B2, B6, E, 22 trace minerals, 18 amino acids (including the 8 essential to life), and protein… and have a high ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity).  The ORAC measures the antioxidant levels of food—and the goji berry is the clear champion!

The goji berry has been tested and approved for use as a…

Vision enhancer
Immune system booster
Liver protector
Sperm stimulator
Libido instigator
Circulation promoter
Age decelerator
Stress reliever
Cholesterol lowerer
Blood sugar balancer

And preliminary research shows that the goji berry has a new title: stem cell stimulant!

Why We Need Healthy Stem Cells

Stem cells are integral to your body’s ability to repair itself.  They can divide without limit and either form new stem cells or morph into specialized cells like muscle cells and brain cells.  You can enhance stem cell function in a number of ways.

For example, staying active helps turn your stem cells into bone and cartilage cells.  Avoiding prescription medications is also beneficial.  But diet is the ultimate manipulator when it comes to boosting stem cell function.  Avoiding excess sugar and calories is a good place to start, and when it comes to what you should eat, goji berries top the list.  Add goji berries to your diet and chances are you’ll increase your number of stem cells exponentially.

The Stem Cell Stimulant

Chinese researchers discovered that supplementing with goji berries increased stem cell proliferation, as well as the number of monocytes in bone marrow.  Monocytes are a type of white blood cell essential to immune system function.

A separate study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine suggests that goji berries may help increase blood circulation of hematopoietic stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells that help to repair blood vessels.

Researchers treated 18 healthy adults between the ages of 20 and 72 with an immune-enhancing cocktail of goji berries and green tea, astralagus, health-promoting bacteria Lactobacillus Fermentum, ellagin acid, beta 1,3 glucan, and vitamin D3.  Twice daily treatment for two weeks caused stem cells levels to peak at 2 – 7 days and then begin to level off around day 14.  Results indicate that a blend of gogi berries, especially when coupled with other immune-boosting nutrients, can help treat conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease that are affected by a decrease in stem cells.
