Health Benefits of Jade

Did You Know…an ornamental gemstone can powerfully fortify your body’s first line of defense against dangerous invaders?

Jade rollers are a favorite tool of elite women in China dating back to at least the 7th century.  These amazingly simple devices preserve and enhance the health of your skin.

Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches that jade drains toxins from the body and balances qi (the central life force that forms the basis of much of Traditional Chinese Medicine).  Scientific investigation offers another insight into jade’s benefits.  It seems that this ornamental gemstone can transmit a kind of infrared ray that increases blood circulation.

Your Body’s First Line of Defense

The 19 million skin cells covering your body at any given time form your body’s first line of defense, shielding you from environmental pollutants… free radicals… bacteria… infectious agents… and UV radiation.  It also locks in essential fluids such as blood, water, and lymph.

As we grow older, however, our skin deteriorates, compromising its protective abilities. Caring for your skin is just as important as looking after the health of your other organs.

Ancient medical wisdom from East Asia holds that jade can maintain and promote the health of your skin in many ways, such as…

  • Detoxifying your internal systems
  • Alleviating stress on organs
  • Fortifying your body’s natural defenses
  • Increasing your innate healing powers

Jade also has the ability to act on your body’s subtle energies.  Although subtle energies are difficult to measure in a laboratory, practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine believe these energies are central to your overall wellbeing.

Energy Medicine and Far Infrared Rays

Measuring subtle energies may be beyond the scope of modern science, but one related property of jade can easily be demonstrated. Jade is a natural transmitter of far infrared rays, a type of energy that extends beyond the red color in our spectrum of visible light… past infrared… in fact, past human detection altogether.

Scientists can measure these rays, however, because their transmission generates low levels of heat.  Research indicates that part of jade’s positive impact on your skin may come from its transmission of these rays.  The quality of the heat it generates by doing so appears to boost microcirculation in your skin.

One of the earliest studies on energy, skin health, and far infrared rays was conducted at Chiba University in Japan and published by the Annals of Physiological Anthropology in 1987.  The study demonstrated that far infrared energy raised skin temperature, thereby increasing blood flow to the small blood vessels in the skin.  In 2000, scientists at Humboldt University in Berlin reviewed existing data on far infrared rays concluded that the rays have great potential for promoting skin health.

Jade Rollers: Then and Now

“In ancient times, there were two basic devices, a jade roller to target acupuncture points and a special flat stone made of jade which was used to open up meridian blockage, allowing your qi and blood to flow better,” said Wei Brian, a skin health guru.  The time-tested benefits of jade rollers include…

  Improving blood circulation
  Boosting skin tone and elasticity
  Facilitating lymphatic drainage
  Eliminating toxins

To use a jade roller, simply roll it upward and outward across your clean face.  This ritual will not only improve the long-term health of your skin, but will also improve its immediate appearance by soothing, de-puffing, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
