This is a MYTH. For decades, medical professionals attributed ulcers to causes such as eating spicy foods, chronic stress, tobacco, alcohol and other less-than-optimal lifestyle habits. A common prescription for ulcers was to dial down the stress and eat a bland, boring diet. While symptoms may have calmed a bit, the ulcers weren’t cured. In the early 1980s, however, it was discovered that these factors—including eating spicy foods—may exacerbate the symptoms of ulcers, but don’t actually cause ulcers. The real cause of peptic ulcer disease (PUD) may surprise you! Pesky Bacteria There’s a particularly pesky bacterium that’s responsible for infecting nearly three million people worldwide…and it’s responsible for two-thirds of all peptic ulcers. Helicobacter pylori lodges in your stomach and duodenum and secretes an enzyme that defends against stomach acid. It settles into your mucosal lining, and not even your immune system can defeat it. In fact, the nutrients sent to attack the bacteria actually end up feeding it! The bacteria thrive, and eventually an ulcer develops. If left untreated for decades, the bacteria may develop into stomach cancer. Good News If you are plagued by ulcers, don’t worry! Helicobacter pylori is treatable! Doctors typically prescribe a two-week antibiotic cocktail, followed by a proton inhibitor pump (PPI) such as Prilosec and a bismuth drug like Pepto-Bismol. There’s a chance that your ulcer isn’t caused by bacteria at all, but by the frequent use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen. No matter the cause, it’s important to see a medical professional to treat this painful and in the most extreme cases life-threatening health condition.

This is a FACT. Truth: drinking water flushes toxins from your body. And no, the water that is part of your soda, or tea, or coffee, or sports drink (or whatever other sugary beverage you enjoy) doesn’t count! In fact, these other drinks actually increase your need for water, because more water is required to flush these liquids (and any toxins they may carry) from the body. Water allows your kidneys to filter toxins, helps your cells take in nutrients and remove waste, and transports nutrients to every organ in your body. If you don’t drink enough water, then you might be suffering from a buildup of toxins throughout your body—from your kidneys to your bloodstream—and the effect is most definitely compromising your immune system. No Fancy Detox System Required It’s very simple. Your kidneys need water to work. Kidneys eliminate toxins and waste products from the blood and urine, and process water-soluble toxins from the liver. If you don’t drink enough water, your kidneys won’t have enough fluid to function properly. Instead of flushing metabolic waste out through the bladder, your body holds on to toxins. You can detoxify simply by increasing your water intake throughout the day, and flushing accumulated toxins from your kidneys! Water also softens stool and promotes regular bowel movements. This is a FACT. The wafts of smoke, the calming effects of aromatherapy…there is something magical about burning incense. It’s a practice with spiritual, cleansing, purifying, even healing applications. But did you know that burning incense carries some pretty significant health risks? Research has linked incense to various health disorders, including respiratory distress, headaches, cardiovascular complications, cancer, and undesirable transformations in lung-cell structure. Incense Smoke as Bad as Cigarette Smoke! According to a 2013 study conducted by University of North Carolina researchers, incense smoke carries similar health risks as cigarette smoke. Researchers used two types of incense commonly burned in 96% of the homes in the United Arab Emirates on a weekly basis. They burnt incense over the course of three hours in an indoor chamber that mimicked an archetypal living room. They identified and examined the particulate concentrations and levels of gases, including carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sulfur dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen and formaldehyde. Human lung cells were kept in the chambers for 24 hours to let the particulates settle and impact the cells. The lung cells reacted with an inflammatory response that mimics the response of lung cells exposed to cigarette smoke! A 2008 study in the journal Cancer linked incense burning to a statistically higher risk of upper respiratory tract cancers, especially squamous-cell carcinoma tumors. Alternatives to Incense Burning Be it sticks, cones, or resin, incense is splashed with essential oils which impart the aroma you crave. Why not ditch the smoke that can make you sick, and instead benefit from the positive health effects of essential oils directly? Use an aromatherapy diffuser, which emits a mist of water and essential oils, so you get a smoke-like effect and a pleasant-smelling home or office without subjecting yourself to any health risks. If you refuse to give up your incense, then avoid using a charcoal briquette to burn your resin, as the smoke from the charcoal adds even more pollutants and carbon monoxide to the environment. And be sure to provide adequate ventilation, opening windows and doors to improve air flow.

Fact or Myth: Is Chewing Gum Bad for You?

This is a FACT. Not only can the very act of chewing gum ruin your teeth and harm your digestion, but the primary ingredients in chewing gum pose significant hazards to your health. In fact, 85% of the major brands fill their chewing gum with the artificial (and poisonous) sweeteners aspartame and sucralose. But, I don’t swallow my gum…you may be thinking. Just as the ingredients in topical lotions seep through the skin and into the bloodstream, the ingredients in chewing gum pass through the walls of the mouth and into the body. What’s more, they shoot straight pass your digestive system, remaining undigested and full of toxins. Think you’re getting some necessary benefits from chewing gum, like losing weight and stifling hunger? Think again! Studies have shown that gum chewing does nothing to stimulate weight loss or control appetite. Let’s take a more in depth look at the most dangerous ingredients in chewing gum. Aspartame Again! If the gum you’re chewing is sugar free, then it’s likely aspartame filled. Heat aspartame to 86 degrees Fahrenheit or above—the human mouth is a natural 98.6 degrees—and it releases methanol, an alcohol that breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a cancer-causing agent used as embalming fluid! No wonder aspartame has been linked to cancers, brain tumors, birth defects, and even weight gain. BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) BHT has already been banned in other countries, but here in the United States, it’s still one of our favorite preservatives, and it makes an appearance in most brands of chewing gum as well. Studies have linked BHT to organ system toxicity, particularly as destruction of the kidneys and liver, as well as hyperactivity in kids. BHT has also been deemed a possible carcinogen. Calcium Casein Peptone (Calcium Phosphate) If Trident is your favorite chewing gum, then you’ve got calcium casein peptone in your system. The specific impact of this highly processed milk derivative has yet to be determined, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe for consumption, regardless of what the FDA rules allowable. It's been linked to baby formula poisonings in China! Gum Base We wish we could tell you exactly what’s in the gum base, but aside from elastomers, resins, plasticizers, and fillers, chewing gum manufacturers don’t have to reveal the ingredients. A recent investigation by The Health Wyze Report revealed that you’re chewing on a combination of polyvinyl acetate (carpenter’s glue), petroleum-derived paraffin wax, and talc, a known carcinogen. Considering how many toxins are packed into that little stick of gum, it’s probably best to trade in the chewing for some crunchy carrots.

Fact or Myth: Chicken Soup Cures a Cold

This is a FACT. Whether canned or homemade, a bowl of steaming hot chicken soup cures a cold! The chicken soup cure has been healing sore throats and stuffy noses since ancient times, and modern research confirms it’s more than just an old wives’ tale. The Low-Down on Colds Health experts have determined that colds are caused by viral infections in the upper respiratory tract. Your immune system responds to a cold by activating the inflammatory response. White blood cells rush to the scene to clear away the infection. Unfortunately, the inflammatory response gives rise to all sorts of annoying cold symptoms: sore throats, stuffy noses, coughs…the works! Chicken soup cures a cold by alleviating these symptoms and providing relief. Science Says… Researchers from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha found evidence of chicken soup’s anti-inflammatory properties. Dr. Stephen Rennard analyzed the ability of white blood cells to migrate across a filter from one side of a chamber to the other. Then, he added chicken soup to the mix. Turns out, fewer white blood cells migrated across the filter when in the presence of chicken soup. Although the exact biological mechanism is undetermined, it seems the chemical makeup of chicken soup either suppresses or slows the accumulation of white blood cells in the lung area, thereby relieving cold symptoms. Although scientists don’t know if it’s a particular ingredient or a more holistic component that makes chicken soup such an effective cold cure, there’s no denying it’s more than just comfort food. Don’t have access to your grandma’s homemade chicken soup? Not to worry; the study tested 13 store-bought brands of canned soup that worked just as effectively. Other Benefits According to Dr. Mehmet Oz, chicken soup also helps you stay hydrated, so that you can flush your system of the virus and heal quicker. Chicken soup is naturally full of electrolytes that help you retain more fluids than water alone does. The salt, steam, and heat in chicken soup works to thin out mucous and relieve congestion. If you’re a vegetarian and don’t eat chicken soup, then try hot teas and other  broths to clear your sinuses and soothe sore throats.

How Honesty Can Improve Health

According to lying expert Robert Feldman, most of us fib at least twice in the course of a 10-minute conversation. His research shows that on average, we lie 11 times a day! New research presented at the national convention of the American Psychological Association suggests that all this lying may be making us sicker and that honesty can improve health. Insincerity Counts When it comes to lying and its affects on health, insincerity counts. We aren’t just talking about big bold-faced lies, but half-truths, compliments given that you don’t really mean, and white lies told to make your life easier but that don’t really hurt anyone. Surely you’ve been guilty of a falsehood like, “Honey I ran out of gas, but by the time I refilled and made it to the market it was closed. So sorry, I couldn’t grab the milk”…when really, you just forgot. As part of their Science of Honesty project funded by Templeton Foundation, University of Notre Dame researchers Anita E. Kelly and Lijuan Wang set out to determine if honesty can improve health. They separated a group of 72 adults (with an average age of 41) into two groups: a control group that weren’t given any details or instructions beyond the fact that they were participating in a study, and a test group that were given the following orders: “Throughout every day of the next five weeks, you must speak honestly, truthfully, and sincerely—not only about the big things, but also about the small things, such as why you were late. You must always mean what you say in situations where your statements are to be taken seriously, as opposed to when joking or obviously exaggerating. While you certainly can choose not to answer questions, you must always mean what you say.” Participants in both groups checked in for polygraph tests and physical health assessments periodically over the next five weeks. Results were astonishing! The group on an insincerity fast showed a significantly decreased risk for seven fewer symptoms, including sore throats, nausea, headaches, and mental symptoms such as tension! Perhaps all the lying may affect our bodies and our health on a psychosomatic level, lowering our immune systems and upping our risks for colds and viruses? Practice Sincerity Giving up insincerity can be as difficult as giving up smoking for some. As you try to implement a 100% sincere life, go easy on yourself. You’re bound to slip you with a compliment you don’t really mean, or a half-truth to avoid making waves. Acknowledge your gaffe with insincerity and move forward with “sincere” intentions.

The Indigo Rose Tomato

Looks like your everyday red variety of tomato has some competition. Have you heard of the new Indigo Rose..the purple tomato teeming with antioxidants praised for their nutritional prowess? It’s more than a pretty pop of color tempting your palette; the indigo rose is pumped with anthocyanins, antioxidants that enrich the tomato with a purple hue and protect against cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative conditions. The Birth of the Indigo Rose The birth of the indigo rose tomato can be traced back to the 1960s, when two scientists cross-cultivated the standard red tomato with wild species of tomato from the Galapagos Islands and Chile. These wild varieties contained anthocyanins. It wasn’t until recently, however, that a team of graduate researchers under the leadership of Professor Jim Myers of the University of Oregon, were able to cultivate a brand new breed of purple tomato. Previously, wild garden tomatoes sported purple leaves or stems, but no purple (or anthocyanins) on the edible parts of the plant. The purple did absolutely no good in the wrong places! Myers and his team successfully bred red and purple tomato plants to create the indigo rose, the darkest variety of tomato around. According to Myers, "It is the first improved tomato variety in the world that has anthocyanins in its fruit." What’s the Big Deal About Anthocyanins Anthocyanins are antioxidants that have been touted for their pain-relieving, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties. Research has shown that a diet rich in anthocyanins may help treat and prevent diabetes, depression, anxiety, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. Red vs. Purple Myers claims that indigo rose tomatoes taste the same as red tomatoes, but it’s important to wait until they are ripe to harvest and eat so that the sugars and acids have had time to completely develop. Like the red tomato, the indigo rose is green when unripe, and turns purple when exposed to sunlight. When the purple hue has changed from a purple-blue to a purple-brown, it’s a green light go for consumption. Blueberries are another fruit known for their high concentration of anthocyanins. They actually have more anthocyanins than indigo rose tomatoes do. Nonetheless, people consume tomatoes more than blueberries—Americans eat 22 pounds of tomatoes a year according to USDA estimates! So adding some indigo rose in with red is a way to ensure you’re consuming a healthy amount of protective anthocyanin antioxidants. Note: Hybridization has been used for thousands of years to create new species of plants and is not to be confused with genetically modified foods.

Artificial Sweeteners Linked to Glucose Intolerance

Glucose intolerance, or pre-diabetes, affects an estimated 41 million Americans. It’s the gateway to type 2 diabetes…and as obesity rates rise, more and more people are stepping through. A brand new study published in the weekly science journal Nature reports: artificial sweeteners linked to glucose intolerance…the very condition these sugar substitutes are supposed to treat!  What Is Glucose Intolerance? When consuming a food or beverage high in sugar, a healthy individual with properly functioning glucose controls will experience a spike in glucose (blood sugar), followed by a decline as insulin is released from the pancreas. Insulin tells the cells to either burn the excess glucose as energy, or store it as fat. When your cells stop listening to the instructions insulin is giving them, they become insulin resistant, and don’t let glucose enter. Blood sugar levels remain chronically elevated, and this state of glucose intolerance eventually manifests as full-blown diabetes if left unmanaged. The Link Between Artificial Sweeteners and Glucose Intolerance Motivated by the emerging link between artificial sweeteners and obesity, researchers from the Weizmann Institute in Israel set out to explore the possible association between artificial sweeteners and glucose intolerance. Young healthy mice received one of three sweeteners in their drinking water—saccharin, aspartame, or sucralose—at a dose equivalent to the FDA’s maximum daily suggested allowance for artificial sweeteners. The researchers compared this variable group to two controls: young healthy mice who received plain drinking water and young healthy mice who received regular sugar in their drinking water. After 11 weeks, researchers tested glucose tolerance by giving the mice a drink high in sugar, and then taking blood samples. The mice who consumed artificial sweeteners exhibited dramatic elevations in blood-glucose levels…much higher than the mice in the control groups. Furthermore, blood-glucose levels in the variable group took significantly longer to stabilize back to normal. Researcher Eran Segal explains, “They showed significant glucose intolerance at levels comparable to a metabolic disease." Artificial Sweeteners Affect Gut Bacteria Researchers speculate that glucose intolerance may be caused by the effect artificial sweeteners have on gut bacteria. To test this theory, they cleared out gut bacteria using antibiotics (which destroy both good and bad microflora). They then tested saccharin’s effects. With no gut bacteria, the artificial sweetener demonstrated no substantial influence on glucose tolerance. However, when they transferred the gut bacteria of mice who had been feed saccharin into the mice with previously bacteria-free guts, the mice became glucose intolerant! An examination of gut bacteria before and after the experiments confirmed that the mice fed artificial sweeteners demonstrated a dramatic increase in several different types of gut bacteria, particularly those associated with obesity. Researchers then attempted to connect the results of this animal study to its applicability to humans. They reviewed data from 381 people and determined that there was indeed a link between artificial sweeteners and glucose intolerance, but they couldn’t determine what came first…the obesity, glucose intolerance, and then artificial sweeteners in an attempt to manage the metabolic conditions…or the artificial sweeteners, then the obesity, then the glucose intolerance. To help solve the mystery, they put seven healthy individuals who did not normally eat artificial sweeteners on an artificial sweetener regimen that matched the FDA’s daily saccharin allowance. The result? Four out of seven people saw a dramatic increase in glucose intolerance, while three people experienced no significant change. The four who were affected had different gut bacteria than the three who were not. Moreover, those exhibiting glucose intolerance showed significant rises in deleterious gut bacteria. So, what to take from this groundbreaking study? Co-author Eran Elinav perhaps sums up the findings the best:  "The most shocking result is that the use of sweeteners aimed at preventing diabetes might actually be contributing to and possibly driving the epidemic that it aims to prevent."

Coffee vs Tea

Trying to decide between tea and coffee? A recent study presented at the ESC Congress weighs in favor of tea in the coffee vs tea debate. French scientists determined that tea consumption can cut your risk of non-cardiovascular mortality by as much as 24%! The Antidote Is in the Tea Researchers analyzed data procured from 131,401 people between 18 and 95 years old who underwent a physical exam at Paris IPC Preventive Medicine Center over January 2001-December 2008. Using an average of a 3.5 years followup, they determined that overall tea drinkers fared better, especially in terms of non-cardiovascular mortality, than did coffee drinkers. Over the span of the seven-year study there were 95 cardiovascular-related deaths and 632 non-cardiovascular deaths. Coffee and tea consumption was examined based on a self-administered questionnaire. Results showed that people who drank coffee were much more likely to smoke than were people who drank tea. The more cups of coffee you drink, the more likely you are to light up. Non-coffee drinkers: 17% smoked 1-4 cups of coffee/day drinkers: 31% smoked 4+ cups of coffee/day drinkers: 57% smoked The relationship between drinking and smoking was reversed in tea drinkers. The more cups of tea you drink, the less likely you are to light up. Non-tea drinkers: 34% smoked 1-4 cups of tea/day drinkers: 24% smoked 4+ cups of tea/day drinkers: 29% smoked This inverse relationship also extended to activity levels: the more tea you drink, the more physically active you tend to be. Lead researcher Professor Nicolas Danchi summarized these results, stating: "Overall we tend to have a higher risk profile for coffee drinkers and a lower risk profile for tea drinkers. We also found big differences with gender. Men tend to drink coffee much more than women, while women tend to drink more tea than men." In terms of the ability of coffee and tea to slash cardiovascular mortality risk, once results were modified to account for smoking, researchers conceded that the higher risk was likely due to the smoking than to the consumption of coffee. Drinking coffee puts you at risk because it increases the likelihood that you are a smoker. When results were adjusted for age, gender, and smoking, tea drinking didn’t significantly trend toward a reduced risk for cardiovascular mortality, but did show an influential effect on lowering your risk for non-cardiovascular death. Danchin explains, "Tea drinking lowered the risk of non-CV death by 24% and the trend towards lowering CV mortality was nearly significant. When we extended our analysis to 2011 we found that tea continued to reduce overall mortality during the six-year period. Interestingly, most of the effect of tea on non-CV mortality was found in current or ex-smokers, while tea had a neutral effect in non-smokers." Why is tea the winner in the coffee vs tea debate? Researchers theorize tea is more effective in lowering risk due to its high antioxidant profile and the tendency of tea drinkers to lead more active, healthy lifestyles.

The Low-Carb High-Fat Diet Is In

A recent diet study profiled in the New York Times has got everybody talking. It supports the new dietary trend of “out with the carbs, in with the fat” that’s made diets like Atkins and Paleo so popular. Turns out that people who followed a low-carb high-fat diet lost more weight and body fat than people who ate a low-fat diet. A low-carb high-fat diet also dramatically decreased cardiovascular disease risk! But…how trustworthy are the results? The Study Researchers from Tulane University divided 148 racially diverse obese men and women into two groups. The low-carb, high-fat group was advised to eat only 40 grams of carbs a day (approximately two slices of bread!). The low-fat group was encouraged to consume less than 30% of calories from fat and 55% of calories from carbohydrates. Researchers tracked results at three different times during the year. The Results On average the low-carb, high-fat group lost 8 more pounds and 1.5% more fat mass than the low-fat eaters did. They also experienced a 1.7% greater gain in lean muscle mass—and that’s without changing their physical activity levels! The low-carb dieters also exhibited better metabolic health, showing a decrease in the markers of coronary artery disease, such as lower triglycerides and inflammation. Low-carb eaters also enjoyed a boost in healthful HDL cholesterol. The low-fat group experienced no such gains. The Accuracy Without a doubt, this study confirms that a low-carb high-fat diet can be advantageous to health and weight loss, but is it necessary to go as low as 40 grams of carbohydrates? The low-carb group of dieters couldn’t seem to cut out that degree of carbs. They reported eating double, and sometimes triple, the 40-gram recommendation…but still kept carb intake half that of the low-fat group. The low-carb eaters also raised their protein intake by 18% on average, whereas the low-fat eaters replaced fat not with protein, but with even more carbohydrates! While the study has received praise from health experts, some believe that perhaps it was less the low-carb high-fat diet and more the dietary and nutritional support the participants received that made it so effective. All dieters from both groups had access to nutritionists, community support, and “accountability measures,” which made it easier to stick with the program. What we do know is that the days of following the federal government guidelines of a whopping 45-65% of your calories from carbs…and only 20-35% from fat, and an even more minuscule 10-35% from protein…are over! Lead researcher Lydia Bazzano, M.D., Ph.D  sums up the implications of the study the best: “The public perception is that a diet high in fat could not possibly be healthy, but in fact it is healthy and is doing an even better job of lowering cardiovascular risk, according to my study.” So while you may not want to go as low as 40 grams a day, watching those carbs could be the key to shedding some pounds, melting away stubborn fat, and fine-tuning your health.

The 20-year high school reunion I attended a little over a week ago has had me (and all of my girlfriends!) thinking and talking a lot about anti-aging. I feel incredibly lucky to have such a close group of friends I grew up with and still keep in touch with on a regular basis.
