Did You Know…that hypnosis can not only put an end to addictions, but can also treat serious physical ailments such as irritable bowel syndrome?
Most people already know that hypnosis can work on a mental level, addressing addictions and childhood issues. What fewer people understand is that hypnosis also works on the physical level, treating chronic pain and even the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburk in Sweden found that hypnosis is an effective psychological remedy that offers long-term relief of severe IBS.
Hypnosis for IBS—a Serious and Mysterious Digestive Disorder
IBS afflicts approximately 3 – 20% of the population, with most studies on the higher end of that range. Symptoms include…
Stomach pain and discomfort
Constipation
Diarrhea
Bloating
Irregular bowel movements
Abdominal swelling
The medical community still does not know what exactly causes IBS, although some theorize the stomach disease could be related to GI motor conditions, brain-gut signaling issues and even mental health problems. The most severe cases of IBS traditionally don’t respond well to treatment… at least not of the conventional sort (diet changes, laxatives and anti-depressants).
Swedish researchers cited four different studies confirming that hypnosis reduces gastrointestinal upset and improves quality of life in IBS patients. Results of one study showed that hypnosis immediately improved IBS symptoms in 49% of patients. Seventy-three percent of these patients showed further improvement 2 – 7 years after receiving hypnotherapy treatment.
Another study conducted by Manchester University researchers showed that three-quarters of IBS sufferers enjoyed improvements in symptoms as long as 5 years after hypnotherapy. Professor Peter Whorwell, lead researcher of the Manchester study says, “It works for people who are quite ill and who have not responded to other treatments.” Patients used positive visualization, imagining their digestive systems as rivers.
Hypnotherapy treatment for IBS typically involves weekly sessions for approximately 3 months.
Other Benefits of Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation, concentration and the power of suggestion to free the mind of addictions to food, drugs, alcohol and smoking, as well as to relieve stress, anxiety and depression. Other benefits include chronic pain management. Hypnosis has been shown to help alleviate pain associated with fibromyalgia, arthritis and migraines. Other conditions that respond favorably to hypnosis are:

Grief and mourning Labor pains Acne Weight Loss |
