Fact or Myth: EFT Tapping on Meridian Points on Your Body Can Alleviate Physical Pain in Minutes

EFT Tapping Therapy, also called the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or Meridian Tapping Techniques (MTT), is a therapy that evolved from acupuncture. It was created by Gary Craig, a Stanford engineer and personal performance coach. He developed it as an acupressure shortcut. The simple one-minute routine involves finger tapping of the most important meridian points related to emotions. While tapping on the meridians, one recites certain affirmations.

Tapping has been used successfully in not only alleviating pain, but also eliminating the emotional problems of thousands of people all over the world.

EFT Tapping: How does this happen?

Negative emotions are the root of most physical pain. They are linked to a disruption in the body’s energy system. According to Craig, tapping balances electricity in the energy meridians of the body by sending healing impulses. Thus, negative emotions and beliefs are gently and easily released, and pain is alleviated.

Although the mechanism by which tapping works is regarded as dubious science by mainstream medicine or those that are unfamiliar with its workings, the successful results tapping has brought to countless people are undeniable.

The first large-scale clinical trial on tapping was detailed in Energy Psychology Interactive. The study involved approximately 5,000 patients diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The patients were randomly assigned to either an experimental group that used EFT therapy, or a control group that used Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) with medication.

Results: 76% of the patients who used EFT tapping to reduce stress experienced complete relief from anxiety symptoms, compared to only 51% of those who were given CBT and medication. Overall, 90% of those who did tapping, experienced improvement.

Gary Craig did not create EFT. He learned it from Roger Callahan, Ph.D. who originally named it TFT [Thought Field Terapy]. In fact Craig even credits Dr. Callahan with being his teacher. Craig made a few tweaks to TFT and called it EFT.
Whatever you call it though, it’s been clinically proven to work in about 80% of the people who try it. That’s a really good success rate!
I use it all the time in working with patients recovering from addiction. It’s effective on pain, anxiety, cravings, anger, a multitude of issues…
