Fact or Myth: Can Drinking Coffee Reduce The Risk of Uterine and Prostate Cancer?

This is a fact.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 8,010 women and 28,170 men will die from either uterine or prostate cancer this year. A recent study conducted by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health suggests that a large number of these individuals may not have been avid coffee drinkers.

Scientists set out to determine whether coffee benefits could possibly affect a women’s risk of developing endometrial (uterine) cancer, a cancer that infects the lining of the uterus. They studied 67,470 women between the ages of 34 and 59 over a span of 26 years. During that time, 672 cases of endometrial cancer were reported.

According to lead researcher Edward L. Giovannucci, M.D., a professor at the School of Public Health, women who drank 4 or more cups of coffee a day decreased their risk of developing endometrial cancer by approximately 25%!

One study followed 47,911 American men from 1986 to 2008, during which time 5,035 cases of prostate cancer were reported. Variables in the control group, such as men who smoked or didn’t exercise, were accounted for when analyzing results.

Researchers concluded that men who consumed 6 or more cups of coffee daily decreased their risk of contracting slow-growing prostate cancer by 20%. The risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer, the very lethal form of prostate cancer that accounts for 1 out of 10 diagnosed cases, decreased by as much as 60%.

Six cups of coffee produced the most dramatic benefit, but drinking even 1 to 3 cups a day decreased the risk of developing deadly prostate cancer by 30%.
